DJ V.E.N.O.M
DJ V.E.N.O.M recently returned home from London to launch & take up a residency at ::definition’s lively monthly night at Rascals in Bangor. V.E.N.O.M started out as a scratch DJ. He’s been DJing for about thirteen years, and was a regular on the local party circuit prior to his debut at Amser/Time (Fission). His reputation as a turntablist with a party vibe was grew from playing at the legendary Go Cat nights and from his back room business at both BaDaBoom and Switch. His influences extend far beyond hip hop as he pays homage both to deep soulful and reggae-influenced D’n'B, reggae/dub, funk/soul, jungle and the bassiest dub step around. V.E.N.O.M tries to push boundaries, with turntablist tricks and genre mash-ups featuring heavily in his sets. He has warmed up for the likes of Marcus Intalex & Chimpo.
GoCat
This legendary local crew held a two year residency at the Waterloo in Bangor, with an ‘anything goes’ music policy loosely based around hip hop, with guest DJs/artists as diverse as Miss Morgan, Mr Phormula & Des Williams, not to mention ::definition’s very own V.E.N.O.M. “We’ll play anything from reggae to techno and a bit of Chaz & Dave…” the crew also boast a healthy obsession with jungle & all things Amen! The boys have held a residency at ::definition from the start, but are set to return in a big way with events under their infamous Go Cat brand coming soon. Watch this space.
Erbman Hustlin
Liverpool’s drum & bass scene is possibly one of the city’s best-kept secrets, but those in the know will already be aware of its emphasis on quality. At the sharp end of matters is Southport’s DJ Erbman, a self-confessed production geek. The DJ & Producer specialises in his own brand of Soulful and dance-floor Drum & Bass. He is known for his production work, which is drawing a lot of attention at the moment. He’s been smashing dance-floors with his own tracks and has put tunes out on the Step Express label and Raw Recordings. ::definition was privileged to be able to present him at the first event of 2009 and was even more pleased when he asked to become a resident at the night.
Hoax
Dj-ing for around 12 years Hoax began to find his sound, listening to Sasha and Digweed before the likes of Oakenfold and Bukem played some of the first dnb he heard. Having not looked back since Hoax has grown from his early inspiration into playing dnb all over the uk, holding a residency in france for 6 months, and recently warming up for Grooverider in Es Paradis, Ibiza. Winning a host of competitions in his 12 years, hosting various radio shows based in the north west and london and warming up for a range of artists, his focus now lies in production. Teaming up with fellow ::definition resident Erbman’, forming digital organix. Keep your ear to the ground!
Blend
At 15 Blend started Dj’in hip hop and trip hop, inspired by artists such as J Dilla, Tribe, Tricky and Portishead. He caught the DnB bug after he got hold of a DJ Hype mix in 2002 and has never looked back. Blend started producing his own music on cubase at the age of 20, and has more recently got into the more experimental side of dubstep and broken beats. He joined the ::definition circuit on the back of an outstanding dnb mixtape, and has treated the monthly ::def crowd to quality, deep and musical dnb & dubstep sets.
